Michael Haneke

Michael Haneke is an Austrian filmmaker whose work is considered at times disturbing and violent by critics. His latest release Funny Games, is a re-make of his 1997 foreign language title of the same name.

Early Career

Raised in Wiener Neustadt, Haneke attended the University of Vienna to study philosophy, psychology, and drama. Originally wanting to be an actor, Haneke settled for becoming a film critic and editor. By 1973 he made the leap into directing for television. His feature film debut was The Seventh Continent in 1989 and three years later made Benny's Video which sparked controversy, but it was his 2001 film The Piano Teacher starring Isabelle Huppert that won him the Cannes Film Festival Grand Prize.
