Greats and Dates
The program, which began in 1926, rose to prominence during the 1980s and 1990s, and won four national championships in a nine year period. They added another championship with the 2001 BCS National Championship. The team has also had two Heisman Trophy winners, Vinny Testaverde in 1986 and Gino Toretta in 1992, and they established a Division I-A college football record by winning 58 consecutive home games. The program has produced some of the best players in football history, including Jim Kelly, Bernie Kosar, Edgerrin James, Ed Reed, Sean Taylor, Ottis Anderson, George Mira, Jeremy Shockey, Bryant McKinnie, Michael Irvin and Ray Lewis. Additionally, the school has also produced some of the great defensive lineman of all-time, such as Ted Hendricks, Jerome Brown, Cortez Kennedy, Russell Maryland and Warren Sapp.
The Best of Times
After years of being considered the 3rd team in Florida, things changed when Howard Schnellenberger became coach in 1979. Within four years, the former assistant to Bear Bryant and Don Shula led the Hurricanes to the 1983 National Championship. This came about after they stunned undefeated Nebraska 31-30 in the Orange Bowl. The next year, Jimmy Johnson replaced Schnellenberger, and led the Hurricanes to the national championship in 1987. Johnson then left to coach the Dallas Cowboys and was replaced by Dennis Erickson. Erickson won two national titles, in 1989 and 1991. In 2001, Butch Davis guided the 'Canes to their only BCS National Championship.
