The Big Boss is a recurring character in all of the Metal Gear Solid games. He is set to make an appearance in MGS4, despite the fact that he died in Metal Gear Solid. The decayed Big Boss Mask is one of the masks that can be earned by completing the game. It is received after perfect playthrough of the entire game on Big Boss Extreme Difficulty and obtaining the Big Boss Emblem. This emblem strikes fear into surrounding soldiers, allowing easier gameplay.
