Memphis Michigan State Pre-Game Analysis

  • The irresistible force and the immovable object. One of the great things to see in sports is a match-up that features a contrast in styles. This is what you have in this game. Saying Memphis likes to push the tempo and run is like saying human beings like to breath in oxygen regularly. They refer to the Tigers style of play as "organized street ball." Indeed, John Calipari loves to have athletes, and he certainly has athletes on this team. Despite being in a league not considered as one of the elite six major conferences, the Tigers have earned their number one seed by scheduling tough out-of-conference games all season long, and have worn down opponents with the depth of their bench. At times, they change all five players on the court, like a hockey team making a line change. Chris Douglas-Roberts and freshman sensation Derrick Rose have been the catalysts for the team. Yet, the Tigers nearly coughed up their second round game against Mississippi State because of their inability to make free throws down the stretch. This is something Michigan State will try to exploit. Additionally, the Spartans will try to 'take the air out of the ball' by working hard on possessions and using a lot of time on the shot clock. Scoring will come from Drew Neitzel and Raymar Morgan, and the Spartans will also need to control boards at the defensive end in order to upset the Tigers.
