Mediterranean Sea

Guide Note

The Mediterranean Sea is a part of the Atlantic Ocean enclosed almost completely by land. Connected to the Atlantic by the narrow Strait of Gibraltar, the Mediterranean Sea is biologically distinct and much saltier than the Atlantic.

Its beautiful beaches make it a popular vacation destination and the diverse collection of plants and animals attract scuba divers and snorkelers.

The Mediterranean Sea has been important to humans since ancient times as a trade and travel route.
