Maverick Family
The Maverick Family of Texas, having historical ties to progressive politics, is offended that John McCain calls himself a "maverick." The word "maverick" is traced back to the 1800s when Samuel Augustus Maverick refused to brand his cattle; he was more concerned with the land he lived on than controlling the livestock on it. Unbranded cattle became known as "Mavericks." Over time the name came to mean one who is "unbranded."1

The Real Original Maverick Quotes
"It didn't bother us when Ford Motor Company used the Maverick family name for their new car. We didn't care that Tom Cruise's character in Top Gun was named Maverick, and we were amused when Madonna used our name for her record label. It is part of the American vernacular. But when McCain and the media placed it in a political context, using the maverick label as the centerpiece of his presidential campaign, each and every member of this family was appalled. We continue to be."2 -- Fontaine Maverick
"I'm just enraged that McCain calls himself a maverick. It's just incredible -- the nerve! -- to suggest that he's not part of that Republican herd. Every time we hear it, all my children and I and all my family shrink a little and say, 'Oh, my God, he said it again'. He's a Republican...he's branded."1 -- Terrellita Maverick
