Lupus is a disease that causes your immune system to attack healthy cells, tissues and organs. This causes inflammation to different parts of the body including, joints, skin, and organs. There are many types of lupus with the most common being systemic lupus erythematosus. Lupus is found in women more than men, although it is not understood why. Diagnosis and treatment for lupus has improved considerably allowing most people with the disease to lead active lives.

Although no case of lupus is exactly alike, some symptoms include fatigue, fever, arthritis, joint/muscle pain, skin rashes, and inflammation. In most cases people with lupus will have "flares", which is where the symptoms come and go, sometimes even completely disappearing for a period of time.

The treatment for lupus will depend on your signs and symptoms. Different medications will be used to treat the various symptoms.

If you have lupus it is important to take care of your body. Some things to do would be get plenty of rest, protect against ultraviolet rays, get plenty of exercise, avoid smoking and eat a healthy diet. People with lupus often experience anxiety, depression and frustration. It is suggested to learn as much as you can about lupus because the more educated you are about it, the better you will feel about your treatment choices. Taking time for yourself and connecting with others who have lupus is also a good step towards learning to cope with the disease.
