Vegetables can also be used instead of breads. Grilled eggplant slices can replace sandwich bread. spaghetti squash or thinly sliced zucchini, green peppers and onions can replace spaghetti.²

Very low carbohydrate diets, such as the Atkins Diet, stress the cardiovascular system by the high intake of fat and cholesterol. Low carbohydrate intake induces ketone production. Ketones can cause nausea or decreased appetite. Nutritionists recommend against maintaining high ketone levels for long periods of time.¹
