History
In 1952, Colin Chapman established Lotus Engineering Ltd. to build race-inspired automobiles. Chapman, a student of structural engineering at University College London, applied the aeronautical engineering techniques he'd learned while serving in the Royal Air Force to automotive technology. The company's first series production car was the Mark 6 racer. In 1954 Team Lotus, the racing arm of Lotus Engineering, was established. Even after Chapman's death in 1982 and the dissolution of Team Lotus in 1994, the company retains a strong connection to its racing roots.
