History

In 1947, Long Island University needed to expand in order to alleviate its crowded Brooklyn campus. The university settled on an estate in Nassau County owned by Marjorie Merriweather Post, daughter of Grape Nuts cereal inventor Charles William Post.

The university petitioned the zoning board of the town of Oyster Bay (now Brookville) for clearance to purchase the land. Wealthy estate owners in the area were fearful of large amounts of students coming into the tranquil and exclusive neighborhood known as the Gold Coast, so they fought the university's petition in court. The case became known as the Battle of Oyster Bay. In 1954, the U.S. Court of Appeals green-lighted the university expansion, and in 1955, the C.W. Post campus opened its doors to 200 students.²

The Campus

The 307-acre campus is considered one of the most beautiful campuses in the United States. It features 4,000 trees, 75,000 tulips and daffodils and an arboretum open to the public seven days a week.³
