Long Island

Located in southeast New York, Long Island is comprised of four counties: Queens, Brooklyn, Nassau and Suffolk.¹

Because Queens and Brooklyn are also New York City boroughs, the term "Long Island" commonly refers to the more rural Suffolk and Nassau counties.²

History

Both the Dutch and English Puritans settled on Long Island in the 17th century. In 1664, England took full control of New Amsterdam (which became New York) and Long Island.⁸

Following the Revolutionary War, farming became the "backbone" of Long Island economy through the 18th and 19th centuries.⁹ Long Island gradually developed into an urban area with the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge and the Long Island Rail Road.¹⁰

The island saw a growth in population post-World War II,¹¹ and it has since become a popular tourist destination--especially The Hamptons, home to "some of the best beaches in the world."¹²
