Liver Cancer

Liver cancer is often linked to cirrhosis of the liver but may occur without it. The liver removes the toxins from the body. Cirrhosis is a scarring of the liver that is strongly associated with alcohol abuse.

80% of cases are from cirrhosis of the liver¹
Cirrhosis usually is the result of alcohol abuse and Hepatitis C
May be primary, starting in the liver, or secondary, metastasized from another cancer
Obesity, smoking and Hepititis B increase the risk

Symptoms

The symptoms of liver cancer often do not develop until the later stages of the cancer. Common symptoms include jaundice, fatigue, nausea, weight loss and pain in the upper right abdomen or right shoulder.

Treatment

Liver cancer is treated based on the condition of the liver, the health of the individual and whether the cancer has spread to other parts of the body. It can be treated with radiation therapy, chemotherapy, surgery and a liver transplant.

United States Statistics

There are an estimated 21,370 new cases of liver cancer and 18,410 deaths for 2008.²
