Linda Ramirez-Sliwinski

Guide Note: The campaign of Barack Obama asked Linda Ramirez-Sliwinski, a trustee of the Chicago suburb Carpentersville, IL, to step down as a pledged delegate for the candidate. Ramirez-Sliwinski was issued a $75 ticket for disorderly conduct when neighbors complained after she told their children to get out of a tree, using the word "monkeys" to describe them. She was concerned about the boy's safety and damage being inflicted to the tree. The Chicago Tribune quoted Ramirez-Sliwinski: "I calmly said the tree is not there for them to be climbing in there like monkeys."

Update Linda Ramirez-Sliwinski is staying on as a delegate for Barack Obama.

Ramirez-Sliwinski said she never indicated that she would step down and there is no reason to step down because the comment she made was not a racial insult.

Ramirez-Sliwinski says the reports of her stepping down were due to a "misunderstanding with one of Obama's staff", likening it to the misunderstanding with her neighbors.

Fast Facts:

  1. Incident occurred: 1 p.m. Saturday, April 5, 2008
  2. Children ages: 8 and 9
