Early Life

Wałęsa was born in Popowo, Poland where he eventually attended vocational school to work as an electrical technician. He worked at the Gdańsk Shipyard until he was fired in 1976 for starting a petition to raise funds that would be used to build a memorial for victims of a violent strike.
