Guide Note:On October 11, 2007, the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics released "A Poison Kiss: The Problem of Lead in Lipstick," a study showing that over half of 33 major brands of red lipstick contained lead.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration does not have a set limit for lead in lipstick. The test was conducted using the FDA's limit for lead in candy, the standard created to protect children from ingesting lead.

A recall has not been ordered, but the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics is petitioning L'Oreal to end the production of lipsticks containing lead.
