A Lazy Susan is a rotating board or tray placed in the center of a table to make it easier to reach spices, condiments or food. It is popular in restaurants and party settings where a large group needs access to shared food items or condiments.

History

The Lazy Susan was first referred to as a dumbwaiter. An article in Vanity Fair in 1917 was the first printed reference to the device as a Lazy Susan. Because of its use as storage for condiments it became a popular device in restaurants, particularly Chinese restaurants which traditionally use a large table. Smaller versions are used in the home with the same practical purpose, but also as a decorative display base. It is also used as a way to prevent wear and tear on furniture.
