Guide Note:Lawrence King died after he was shot in the Shooting at E.O. Green Middle School. Reportedly King had asked Brandon David McInerney to be his Valentine in the week before the shooting. McInerney approached King in the school's computer lab on February 12, 2008, shooting him in the head. McInerney, 14 years-old, is being tried as an adult, charged with premeditated murder with a hate crime enhancement.

King was taken off a ventilator two days after the shooting, having been declared brain dead. His parents allowed his organs to be donated. King reportedly frequently dressed in girls clothing, wore high heels, and make up and was openly gay.
