Lashkar-e-Taiba

Lashkar-e-Taiba is a militant Islamic group based in Pakistan and Kashmir. Their stated goal is to end any Indian occupation of Kashmir and to further promote a fundamentalist Islamic government in Pakistan and throughout South Asia.¹

The Pakistani government has announced that Zarrar Shah and Zaki ur-Rehman, senior members of Lashkar-e-Taiba, have confessed to being involved in the attacks.² India's Prime Minister Manmohan Singh announced on January 6, 2009, that evidence suggested official Pakistani agencies likely supported the terrorist organization in their attack on Mumbai.³

Suspicion in 2008 Mumbai Attacks

Though an unknown group named Deccan Mujahideen is taking credit for the widespread terror attacks on November 26, 2008, in Mumbai, several news organizations are suggesting that Lashkar-e-Taiba may have organized the assault. Fox News indicates that the group now calls itself Indian Mujahideen, though this report is unverified.⁵

Role in 2006 Mumbai Attacks

Mumbai was previously attacked on July 11, 2006, in a series of train bombings that claimed the lives of nearly 200 people. Though not claiming responsibility for the attack, Indian authorities blamed Lashkar-e-Taiba and arrested 400 people they believed to be tied to the organization.⁶
