Plot
Ryan Gosling portrays Lars Lindstrom, who lives in the garage of his brother Gus and sister-in-law Karin's home. Lars has become socially isolated and rarely leaves the garage, with the exception of going to work and church. A co-worker shows him a website that sells fully customizable life sized anatomically correct dolls. Several days later UPS delivers a large package for Lars. His attitude immediately changes as he arrives at his brother's house, smiling and saying he has a visitor. Lars goes on to explain that his visitor Bianca is a Brazilian-Danish missionary and since they are not married Lars asks if she can stay in Gus's house. Gus agrees and him and Karin are excited to see Lars out of his isolation, until they realize Bianca is a doll. They urge Lars to take Bianca to their family doctor, just for a check up. Later Gus and Karin speak to the doctor, who urges them to go along with the delusion. The doctor reassures them that Lars will get rid of the delusion when he doesn't need it anymore, that Bianca is in town for a reason.
