Laos Coup Plot

On June 4, 2007, nine men were charged with plotting to overthrow the Communist government of Laos. FBI agents arrested the men, all living in California, on allegations that the group inspected weapons they intended to purchase for import into Laos, via Thailand, to arm anti-government rebel groups. General Vang Pao, a longtime ally of the United States who led CIA backed forces during the Vietnam War, was implicated as the group's leader. The indictments generated protests and criticisms from Hmong American groups and others, who have pointed to Vang Pao's longtime service to the United States as evidence that he supports U.S. interests in South East Asia. Though Vang Pao is a strong opponent of the government of Laos, he has recently softened his position calling for normalized relations between Laos and the United States. The next hearing is scheduled for December, 2008, though the trial is not planned until 2010.
