LASIK

Guide Note

LASIK is a type of laser eye surgery used for correcting a persons vision. It can be used to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. Laser eye surgery works by reshaping the cornea. LASIK eye surgery is just one of the different types of procedures used to reshape the cornea.

The Procedure

During the LASIK eye surgery procedure the patient is administered a local anesthesia. An instrument called a microkeratome is used to cut a flap in the cornea. Afterwards, the cornea is peeled back and the underlying cornea tissue is reshaped using a excimer laser. After the cornea is reshaped, the flap is put back in place.

After Surgery

Healing is usually rapid. In most cases improved vision is noticed within a few days following LASIK eye surgery. It is possible that your vision will remain blurry for a first day. You need to have plans for a driver to take you home after your LASIK eye surgery. You will need to use prescription eye drops to prevent infection and keep your eyes moist. You will have a follow up visit with your surgeon around 24 to 48 hours after your LASIK eye surgery then, subsequent visits on a regular basis for the first six months.
