History

Kyoto, meaning "capital city" in Japanese, was the country's capital from the 11th Century to 1868. Throughout that time, the city was the site of several battles, including the Onin War from 1467 to 1477 that nearly destroyed the area.

During World War II, Kyoto was originally considered to be one of the targets for the atomic bomb, but plans were later changed. As a result, the city is one of few in the country to have a substantial amount of prewar buildings still standing.

Economy

Kyoto's balance of traditional and modern flair makes it one of the most visited locations in Japan. Aside from tourism, the city's economy is also supported by the electronics industry, as it is the headquarters site of Nintendo, Kyocera and OMRON.
