Guide Note

In 1922, the tomb of Tutankhamun was found by Howard Carter. At that time his team was more concerned with removing the jewelry and amulets from the body of King Tut, and as a result, his legs and his head were severed and his torso cut in half. Since then, the body has been x-rayed three times, the most recent by Secretary General of the Egyptian Supreme Council of Antiquities, Dr. Zahi Hawass. On November 5, 2007, King Tut's face was unveiled for the first time in public.

Who Was King Tut?

King Tut was an Egyptian Pharaoh during the Eighteenth dynasty. He assumed the throne around the age of 8 or 9 and held it for ten years before dying around the age of 18 or 19-years-old.

CT Scan Results

In 2005, scientists concluded, after reviewing results from a CT scan, that King Tut died of a gangrene infection in his leg. It is believed several days prior to his death he sustained a fracture in his leg that became infected.
