Founding

Kellogg's was founded February 19, 1906, by Will Keith Kellogg as an outgrowth of his work with his brother John Harvey Kellogg at the Battle Creek Sanitarium, a combination hospital and health spa for the elite and famous. The company was grounded in practices based in the Seventh-day Adventist Christian denomination. The company produced and marketed the hugely successful Kellogg's Toasted Corn Flakes and was renamed the Kellogg Company in 1922.

The Wheat Flake

Cereal flaking was discovered by W.K. Kellogg and his brother John Harvey Kellogg by mistake while in the process of cooking some wheat for a type of granola. After discovering that the wheat had gone stale the brothers decided to force the grain through the rollers anyway. Surprisingly, each wheat berry was flattened and came out as a thin flake. Kellogg continued experimenting and developed the process for flaking corn, thus creating the cornerstone of what was to be the "Battle Creek Toasted Corn Flake Company".
