Kathy Sierra is a blogger and programmer known for her award-winning Head First series of books with her partner, Bert Bates. The series takes an unorthodox approach to teaching and makes use of heavy visual elements.

Online Harassment Controversy

In March 2007 Sierra cancelled an upcoming appearance due to online harassment. The incident received wide media attention and in the end caused her to take an extended break from blogging. Her follow up blog post regarding the issue received over 1000 comments, some of which threatening. She commented on her blog about the issue saying "If you want to do something about it, do not tolerate the kind of abuse that includes threats or even suggestions of violence (especially sexual violence). Do not put these people on a pedestal. Do not let them get away with calling this 'social commentary,' 'protected speech,' or simply 'criticism'."
