Kansas Portland State Pre-Game Analysis
- Another season of league dominance was turned in this year by the Kansas Jayhawks. The team finished 31-3 this season, and won a share of their conference regular season championship by going 13-3 in league play. Consider also that "Rock Chalk Jayhawk" came within 13 points of a perfect season. Brandon Rush is the player NBA scouts are drooling over, but he suffered through injuries most of the season. Darrell Arthur actually led the team in scoring at 13.1 points per game, one of four Kansas players to average double figures in scoring this season. Darnell Jackson is a force on the boards, averaging nearly 7 rebounds per contest. The Jayhawks have made 12 Final Four appearances in their history, but their last trip was in 2003. This is the 20th anniversary of one of the great underdog runs in tournament history, when they 1988 Jayhawks won the national championship. Guided by coach Larry Brown, the team forever dubbed as "Danny Manning and the Miracles" knocked off top seeds Duke in the national semifinals and then powerful Oklahoma in the championship game. When it comes to Portland State's success in 2008, it's all about their high-scoring offense. The Vikings like to play a track-meet style game, with points coming early and often. The backcourt tandem of Jeremiah Dominguez and Deonte Huff combined to average 28 points per contest. Portland State has won 14 of their last 15 games, with their only loss in that stretch coming on the road at Cal State Fullerton (who is also in this tournament). Primarily known in the sports community as the home of former NFL quarterback Neil Lomax, the Vikings are enjoying their first ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament in just their 12th season of playing at the Division I level.
