KRS-One is a Grammy-nominated rapper from South Bronx, New York City. As leader of Boogie Down Productions (BDP), rival group of Marley Marl's Juice Crew, his politically and socially conscious songs made him one of the most influential hardcore hip-hop artists of the late 1980s. He is often credited by critics and other hip hop artists as epitomizing the "essence" of an emcee. Around the early 1990's BDP's audience began to slip as a response to what was considered his "preachy" rap. As a reaction, KRS-One re-established his street credibility with harder, sparer, beats and raps.
