Guide Note: Julius Caesar was an ancient Roman military and political leader who played a critical role in the transformation of the Roman Republic into the Roman Empire. Caesar rose quickly through the political ranks, possibly partially through bribery, and became governor of Roman Gaul. Many natives of the region were rebelling against Roman rule. Caesar led his troops to victory, conquered Britain, and brought the entire area securely under Roman dominion. After consolidating his power, he led the armies in that region back to Rome, overthrowing the government and making himself dictator. Caesar then instituted policies that kept Roman society, which had been having many internal problems, from collapsing. He pursued his enemies to Egypt, where he became romantically involved with the Egyptian leader Cleopatra. Successfully gaining control of much of northern Africa, he returned to Rome, where he was named dictator for life. It was a short life, however; he was assassinated only a few months later.
