Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell is a highly acclaimed historical fantasy novel, set during the Napoleonic Wars in 19th Century England, and containing elements of Historical Fiction, Fantasy, Magical Realism and Fairy Tales, as well as the literary influence of Charles Dickens. It is a story of a return of magic to England and the complicated relationship between two eminent magicians. Fact and Fiction
The novel interweaves historical fact and fiction in such a way that the reader can distinguish each, yielding a sort of history lesson in the form of a Fantasy novel. Major personalities from history, including Napolean, The Duke of Wellington and Lord Byron, occupy the same universe as Clarke's inventions, such as John Uskglass, the Raven King of northern England.
