Early Life and Family

McCain was born in the Panama Canal Zone in 1936 while his father, John S. McCain, Sr. was stationed in the American-controlled zone.³

He is currently married to Cindy McCain, who is the chair of Hensley & Co., one of the largest distributors for Anheuser-Busch beer, the maker of Budweiser.⁴

Cindy McCain's substantial personal fortune and family ties were instrumental in John McCain's successful congressional bid.⁴

Military Service

McCain graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1958 and became a naval aviator flying attack aircraft from aircraft carriers.⁵

He was shot down in 1967 during a bombing mission in North Vietnam and was imprisoned and tortured. He was released in 1973 in accordance with in Paris Peace Accords.⁵

McCain retired from the U.S. Navy in 1981.⁵

House and Senate Careers

McCain was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1982, winning Arizona's first congressional district.⁵

During his first term, he opposed the creation of a federal holiday honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He later said that the vote was a mistake.⁶

While in the U.S. Senate, McCain pushed for Campaign Finance Reform, cosponsoring the McCain-Feingold Law which aimed to limit "soft money" contributions. McCain also worked to limit earmarks and pork barrel spending.⁷

In 2007, Senator McCain worked vigorously with the Bush administration to pass the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2007 which would have provided a legal path to citizenship for immigrant workers.⁸

Iraq War and "The Surge"

John McCain has been a staunch conservative in terms of troop deployments in Iraq, arguing that a "surge" of American troops was needed in the country, rather than a withdrawal as congressional Democrats suggested.⁹

McCain came under fire when he told a town hall meeting that he would accept a troop presence in Iraq for 100 years if necessary.¹⁰

2008 Presidential Bid

John McCain is currently the presumptive Republican presidential nominee for the 2008 Presidential Election.

He secured the nomination with the defeat of Huckabee in the March 4th Primaries and will now face Barack Obama in the general election.
