Joe Swanberg is an independent movie director and actor known for his Mumblecore films. His latest film, Hannah Takes the Stairs, received critical acclaim at the South by Southwest Festival in 2007.

Biography

Born in Detroit, Michigan, Swanberg moved to Illinois at a young age, attending high school at Naperville Central High School. He then studied film at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale while working for two different film festivals in the Chicago area. By 2005 Swanberg made his first feature, Kissing on the Mouth. This was the first installment of what would become a movement of low budget films known as Mumblecore. The following year Swanberg made LOL and by 2007 made the romantic comedy Hannah Takes the Stairs. Swanberg has also made numerous shorts and online content. His latest film is Nights and Weekends.
