A native of South Carolina, Rice won the AAA International League Rookie of the Year Award in 1974, and came in second in Rookie of the Year voting in his debut 1975 season. Although the Red Sox played in the World Series in 1975, a wrist injury kept the young Rice out of the historic series. His best year came in 1978, when he won the American League Most Valuable Player Award by hitting .315, with 46 home runs and 139 RBIs. He led the American League in home runs three times, including in 1978, and in RBIs twice. He finished his career with a lifetime .298 batting average and 382 home runs. Upon his retirement in 1989, Rice became involved with an array of charity organizations, and has served as a coach of the Red Sox in various capacities since 1992. He remains a perennial Baseball Hall of Fame candidate, but so far, has not mustered enough votes to be admitted.
