Controversy

An unsealed federal indictment in March 2008 claimed that Saddam Hussein's intelligence agency paid for U.S. Government officials to come to Iraq. The trip was scheduled right before the buildup to the war. McDermott has stated that the trip he took was paid for by Muthanna al-Hanooti, an official of a Detroit-based Islamic charity. al-Hanooti has been named and taken under custody in the investigation. Allegations claim that al-Hanooti was paid 2 million barrels of oil to provide the government of Iraq names of U.S. members of Congress in favor of lifting of sanctions against Iraq, and arranging for those members to be brought to Iraq.
