Jim Martin
Jim Martin lost the runoff last December 2, 2008 against incumbent Senator Saxby Chambliss for a U.S. Senate seat representing Georgia state.1 In the November polls, the two candidates did not get more than 50 percent votes which according to Georgia law, is subject to a runoff.2 Martin was the Democrat candidate for the U.S. Senate. He formerly represents the 5th District of Georgia in the State House of Representatives.

Early Life
One of six sons, Martin contracted polio at the age of eight. After attending the University of Georgia, Martin enrolled in the U.S. Army and fought in Vietnam. Martin served in the Georgia House of Representatives from 1983 to 2001 and ran for Lieutenant Governor of the state in 2006. His campaign against Saxby Chambliss has been one of the most closely-watched and hard-fought Senate races of 2008. Martin hopes to benefit from the coattails of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, who is running a close campaign in the typically Republican stronghold.3
