Jesse Carrizales

Guide Note: 17-year-old Roosevelt High School student Jesse Carrizales was shot and killed by campus police officer Junus Perry on April 16, 2008. Carrizales, a resident of Fresno, California, had attacked Perry with a baseball bat while shouting obscenities on the school grounds, knocking the officer off of his feet and causing him to drop his weapon. Perry then reached for his secondary weapon, which he fired at Carrizales in self-defense. Carrizales died from his injuries within a half hour.

It has been suggested that Carrizales, who had struggled with depression before transferring to Roosevelt High, may have intended to start a fatal confrontation with Perry, a case of "suicide by cop." (According to Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer, Carrizales taunted Officer Perry and even said "go ahead and kill me.")

Carrizales' family suggests that Perry should have employed non-lethal means of restraining Carrizales and thereby saved the young man's life.

Much of the aftermath was captured on video and uploaded to the streaming video website QIK.
