Jellyfish

Body
The body of a jellyfish consists of an outer covering known as the epidermis, the inner lining, which produces jelly, is called the gastrodermis. Jellyfish do not have a brain, heart, blood or bones. The gastro vascular cavity functions as a mouth and anus. Their tentacles contain stingers that release venom.2
Jellyfish Stings
Jellyfish stings should be treated immediately. Symptoms include an intense, stinging pain, itching, rash and raised welts. In severe cases coma or death may occur.3

Treatment
- Assess pain
- Rinse stingers off with salt water4
- Douse any adherent tentacles with salt water or vinegar4
- Apply a cold wrap or ice for 10-20 minutes4
- Call for medical aid or ambulance4
