DUI Charge
On October 8, 2007, Shirley reportedly crashed his vehicle into an apartment building and fled the scene in Fresno, California. He was later found and tested 0.12, above the legal blood alcohol limit of 0.08. He was suspended from the Fresno State football team for five games due to the incident.3
The trial for Shirley's drunk driving charges was set to begin in September of 2008, but had to be postponed as Shirley could not attend. In Shirley's absence, the judge issued a bench warrant, said to go into effect on September 30, 2008, allowing time for Shirley to travel to California.1
Football Career
Shirley began his college football career with the Fresno State Bulldogs, where he was redshirted in 2003. He went on to play 32 games between 2004 and 2006, recording 57 tackles and five sacks. Shirley was drafted in the fifth round of the 2008 NFL draft by the Cincinnati Bengals. He made his NFL debut that same year, playing in four pre-season games and totaling seven tackles and one sack for a loss.2
