Golan Cipel Controversy

Shortly after taking office, James McGreevey appointed Golan Cipel as his Homeland Security advisor. This appointment sparked criticism because, as an Israeli citizen, Cipel could not obtain the required security clearance and was thought to to lack adequate experience for the position. McGreevey's unusually close relationship with Cipel was also controversial. As investigations into his background intensified, Cipel resigned from the position according to McGreevey's request. On August 12, 2004, under threats of a sexual harassment case from Cipel's lawyers, McGreevey announced that he was a Gay man and had, at one time, had an intimate relationship with Cipel.
