Iran Hanging
On July 27, 2008, 29 people were hanged in the Iranian capital of Tehran.1 The charges against those executed ranged from murder to public drunkenness.2

Crackdown and Executions
In accordance with Iran's crackdown on citizens engaged in so-called "immoral behavior," Iranian police arrested several dozen people during the summer of 2008. Amnesty International listed Iran as the country with the second-highest rate of executions in 2007, second only to China.4
