Influenza is an infectious respiratory illness caused by different viruses. Infection can be mild to severe and complications can lead to pneumonia. In most cases, the flu will go away within a week or two.

The common cold and the flu are both respiratory illnesses but they are caused by different viruses. Because the flu and a cold have the same symptoms it can be difficult to tell the difference. Someone with a cold is more likely to have a stuffy or runny nose. In most cases the flu is worse than a cold. Colds do not normally result in pneumonia, bacterial infection and hospitalization like the flu does.

The flu shot is the first line of defense to keep from getting the flu. Other things that can help are washing your hand frequently, eat a healthy diet and get plenty of sleep. Regular exercise helps boost your immune system against the flu. Limiting air travel can help prevent getting the flu. When possible avoid crowded places during peak flu seasons can help prevent getting the flu.
