The iPhone 3G went on sale on July 11, 2008. Customers were disappointed to find that they could not activate their phones in-store due to a problem with iTunes server-end software. Customers were told to go home and finish activation by using their own computers.1

Different Activation Process
Unlike the release of the original iPhone, the iPhone 3G had to be activated in-store. During the previous launch, allowing owners to activate their phones at home made it easier to unlock iPhones. Many unlocked first generation iPhones wound up overseas; an estimated 100,000 iPhones made their way to Australia, while hundreds of thousands wound up in India.3
