Hi all,
As a guitar player of nearly three decades myself, I thought I'd share with you the most commonly used and easiest-to-remember mnemonic for remembering the names of the strings and the order they go in. In order from the bottom or 1st (highest E) to the top 6th (lowest E) the strings go like this; E,B,G,D,A,E, and are very easy to remember by using the following mnemonic device;
1: Every
2: Boy
3: Gets
4: Dinner
5: At
6: Eight
By remembering this simplest of key phrases, "Every Boy Gets Dinner At Eight," you should be easily able to keep the names/notes of each and every single string straight in your mind; do bear in mind that the "first string," is always the one on the bottom, your high E string. This way, if someone says, "start on the 'D' string," you can count off to yourself, "Every Boy Gets Dinner," and you'll know exactly where you are and where you want to go. Once you've been at it for a while, you will no longer need such mnemonic devices, but you'll probably find that they'll stick with you just the same.
This was one of the very first things my teacher taught me when I first started playing almost 30 years ago, and it's one of the very first things I teach all my own students to this very day.
So that's it! Happy playing, and best of luck to you all, sincerely, "Mac"
