Mulled Wine Tips
- Turn an inexpensive bottle of red wine (like a Merlot or Shiraz) into delicious mulled wine.
- Use whole spices instead of ground versions to keep the finished product from becoming gritty.
- Add the ingredients to the pan and heat until it's barely simmering.
- If the mixture begins to emit white steam, turn the heat down to prevent the alcohol from evaporating.
- Avoid boiling the wine since it will turn the spices bitter and cook out all of the alcohol.
- Simmer gently for about 20 minutes.
- Spoon the fruit into the bowl and pour the wine over it for a festive presentation.

Tips and Tricks
- Let the ingredients shine and obtain the best flavor from your mulled wine with these simple tricks.
- Try an inexpensive bottle of Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon as the base of the mulled wine since the flavors of an expensive bottle would be masked by the fruit and spices anyway.13
- Use whole spices instead of pre-ground versions when mulling the wine to keep the beverage from turning cloudy or gritty.14
- Try not to let the wine boil since it will cause the spices to become bitter.14
- Consider using a crockpot to slow cook your mulled wine. Just toss in ingredients and forget about for a couple hours.15
- -Try letting the wine sit on low heat in a crockpot to keep it warm during a party.14
- For a quick mulled wine method, try microwaving the ingredients in a microwave-safe container.16
Variations
- Add a few new ingredients into the mix to create varieties of mulled with diverse aromas and flavors.
- Try brown sugar instead of white for a richer flavor.17
- Include brandy for an extra-strong brew.18
- Use star anise and vanilla for additional layers of flavor.19
- Make mulled wine with port, honey, tangerines and raisins for a sweeter flavor.20
