- So you've chosen to switch to Gmail as your main email client, but you don't want to lose access to the thousands of important emails that you sent and received before making the switch. No need to worry. Since Gmail recently began to support IMAP technology, importing your archived email into Gmail has become a relatively easy process. Here's how to go about importing your Outlook files into Gmail:
- Start by opening up and signing into your new Gmail account. Click on the Settings button in the top right-hand corner of the screen.
- Click on the Forwarding and POP/IMAP heading in order to change your IMAP preferences.
- In the IMAP access box, click on Enable IMAP. Click on Save Changes to save your preferences.
- In order to configure your previous email client to work with Gmail, click on Configuration instructions.
- Choose your previous email client from the list of supported clients and click on the link for instructions on how to configure it.
- Follow the instructions for how to set up your email client to work with Gmail.
- Use your new IMAP account to drag and drop all of your archived email into Gmail.
WARNING: If you have a lot of old emails archived, the transfer process make take a while, so be patient.
