Hotel Oberoi Attack
The Oberoi Hotel in Mumbai, India, was the first of ten targets in a terrorist attack on the city, on the evening of November 26, 2008. Gunmen entered the luxury hotel, setting it aflame, killing 36 people and holding dozens more hostage.1 Other sites targeted by the terrorists included the Taj Mahal Palace hotel, a train station, a restaurant and a Jewish community center.2
On November 28, 2008, Indian commandos stormed the Oberoi Hotel, freeing over 90 guests who'd been trapped inside since the siege began.1 3A total of 170 people died in the terrorist attacks in India. Nine of the gunmen were killed.
Parts of the hotel re-opened on December 21, 2008.4
