Halloween History Timeline

• 1000—100 B.C.: Ancient Celts celebrate the coming of their New Year, called Samhain¹
• 43 A.D.: Ancient Romans incorporate Samhain into their own practices, calling it Feralia. ²
• November 1, 731 A.D.: November 1st declared All Saint's or All Hallows Day, October 31st becomes All Hallows Eve.³
• October 31, 1517: Martin Luther stops Protestant celebration of All Saint's Day⁴
• November 5, 1517: Protestant Celts create Guy Fawkes Day¹
• 1600's: Puritans ban Halloween, Christmas and Easter due to Catholic and pagan origins¹
• 1846: Halloween comes to America with thousands of Irish immigrants.⁵
• 1920-1930: Halloween becomes a secular holiday. Parents hold parties for children ²
• Present day: Halloween is the second most celebrated holiday in the United States⁶
