Hippopotamus

The hippopotamus is a semi-aquatic mammal, generally living in Africa, and is very territorial in it's habitat. Being highly protective of its young—and very large—the Hippopotamus is one of the most dangerous of all mammals.

Aquatic Adaptations

The hippopotamus has adapted unique amphibious features. Its nostrils, ears and eyes are conveniently located along the top of its head, allowing for breathing and observation above the water's surface. The hippo can seal its ears and nostrils when underwater, much like eyelids. Studies of hippos in the wild have shown a profound symbiotic relationship between themselves and the bodies of water in which they dwell.
