Highland Pony

The rugged Highland Pony is native to the Scottish Highlands for which it is named, as well the islands off of Scotland's western coast. Highland ponies are versatile sport ponies, hardy work animals and—due to their characteristic serenity and intelligent nature—fine equine companions.

Background

The Highland Pony arrived in Scotland before the mountainous north was ever called the Highlands—it even predates the arrival of humans, with fossil remains dating to 60,000 B.C. Intimately entwined with Scottish history, they have been used for agriculture, warfare, hunting, sporting and smuggling.² The Highland Pony's calm temperament may be attributable to its having been bred with Arabian horses.³
