Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was a bohemian French post-impressionist artist in the late 19th century. Most of his paintings depict scenes from cabarets, circuses, dance halls, racetracks and nightclubs. He earned much of his livelihood by creating promotional posters for the Moulin Rouge and other French cabaret theaters.

During a career that spanned less than two decades, Toulouse-Lautrec created over 350 prints and posters, 5,000 drawings and 1,000 paintings.

1878: Breaks his left thighbone and is bedridden for a long time
1879: Breaks his right thighbone; his breaks do not heal properly and consequently, his legs stop growing
1882: Studies the Arts in Paris; becomes friends with Vincent van Gogh

1885: Begins frequenting Montmartre's cabarets
1891: His famous Moulin Rouge poster turns him into an overnight sensation in Paris
1893: First major private exhibition, organized by his friend
