Hemant Karkare
Mumbai's Anti-Terrorist Squad chief Hemant Karkare was killed during the coordinated Mumbai terrorist attacks of November 26, 2008. 54-year-old Karkare was shot three times in the chest while leading the anti-terror operation outside of the Taj Hotel in Mumbai. Also killed in the attacks were Mumbai Police Commissioner Ashok Kamte and encounter specialist Vijay Salaskar.
Karkare had been leading a squad that was conducting a probe of the Malegaon blasts.
